Movie Review - Eat

Movie Review - Eat

I had seen the trailer prior to this movie, and already knew to watch it on an empty stomach as it looked like a simple gross-out movie. This is exactly what it is. So really all I can say about this movie is for an hour and a half I just yelled at the screen shouting “GIRL, STOP EATING YOURSELF!” This is all the film is really, taking the idea behind eating disorders and making a self serving cannibal girl the heroine. Prior to going on I'm just gonna say, this film is vile. Like really vile, seriously trust me with every inch of trust in your body before deciding if you really have the stomach for it.

Its a film about an actress named Novella who is completely failing at an actress. She goes from audition to audition getting crapped on because she just isn't good at it. This results in her brilliant idea to chew on herself in some of the most unsettling ways I've ever seen. She gets evicted from her house, and she can't land a role besides a simple anal porn role. Every time something bad happens, she begins to chew pieces of herself off more and more, starting with cuticles, to the brilliant scene where she rips a string of flesh off the side of her arm, which happened to be my favorite and least favorite scene of the film. Thats about it for the synopsis, oh wait. Her best friend is also a sociopathic party girl who has no qualms about shooting a couple guys scrotums off.

Now the acting is terrible, like really terrible. Some of thee absolute worst acting in a horror film this year but you are definitely not watching this for the stellar performances. The film serves up a huge dose of amazing special effects. The team behind the effects handles the gross out factor with true skill. No uses of CGI in this, just old fashioned blood and latex. This is where the film truly shines.  It will make your stomach churn, and when I watch a film like this, that's really all I am looking for. And that about sums up my feelings for the movie. It's a hugely fun experience if you love wincing as a girl rips off her nails and chewing the flesh underneath as a nighttime snack.
